It is often a challenge for men to speak about their health issues openly and on a regular basis. However, we are not afraid to pick an occasion like Father’s Day to break the stigma and speak about men with diabetes.
Men are at a greater risk of being diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes compared to women. According to statistics, in 2017, 7.3% of Canadians (which is an estimated 2.3 million people aged 12 and older) reported being diagnosed with diabetes. The proportion of males who reported being diagnosed with diabetes was 8.4% whereas only 6.3% of females reported being diagnosed. New research has revealed that men are biologically more susceptible and need to gain far less weight than women to develop the condition.
As diabetes is a growing concern in men, it is imperative that we educate ourselves about some of the symptoms that are unique to men. Besides the common signs of diabetes like thirst, frequent urination, headaches, and fatigue, the signs and symptoms of men suffering from diabetes include:
Low testosterone may cause depression, decreased sex drive, lack of energy, and reduced muscle mass. Male-specific sexual problems, as well as urological problems, could also become a possibility. A common symptom of chronic disease in men is the inability to get or maintain an erection, which is also a common symptom of diabetes. Other complications such as leg amputations or death are also common among men with diabetes.
Diabetes may be a growing issue among the male population, but the fight to conquer the disease continues. It is imperative for a diabetes patient to maintain a healthy balance in his mental, physical, and emotional health to live a healthy lifestyle. This Father’s Day we want to give you help so you can help the men in your life living with diabetes. Below are some ideas that you may want to consider for the celebration of the special day!
